I hardly ever have lag problems, but the last week or so - European districts have been unplayable for me (I am in the UK). Seems OK in town, but out of town I have severe and frequent rubber-banding and/or character freezing.

International and American districts work fine for me - ping times are slightly longer of course, but they are consistent and I don't get the rubber-banding.

If it's still the same tonight, I'll do a tracert and try to see where my problem might be.

As another user living in the UK, I can empathise with the above, and to some extent with the OP. My connection is a stable 10 Meg and still on occasion I suffer fairly severe lag, and I know many people who live in my area who do too. There was one notable week, where I could not play at all in the US districts, as in, 10k ping plus, even in town. I've been playing for three years and this simply did not happen until about 9 months ago. As for people who claim it's all client side, of course you're entitled to you opinion, but from my point of view there are just too many people suffering for this to be "old" pc related or firewall/router issues. Especially when so many of those affected have a good understanding of the "obvious" possibilities and rule them out first.

On an interesting note, while in a skype call with some other GW players, we observed a strange occurrence...a friend of mine sounded "robotic" (read:connection issue) in skype while simultaneously many of us noted a ping jump to the 1k region in GW. This happened a number of times, and seemed almost as if GW "tugs" on bandwidth occasionally. I'd love to know if the cause was GW or Skype, if for no other reason than closure!

More likely neither. It was probably an intermediate node in your connection to both your friend and your connection to GW. Like if you're having a party and both a friend and the pizza you ordered fail to arrive on time because they both use the same road and there is a traffic jam.

Most lag is caused because:

1) your graphics card can't display stuff fast enough
2) your memory can't hold enough info
3) your ISP is poor
4) your modem/router is poor
5) your CPU is poor
6) some combination of the above

Yes, Anet can and does cause lag at times. Usually when this happens, it hits an entire server (Europe knows this well). I'm not saying Anet isn't to blame for SOME of the lag, but they are unlikely to be the cause of what I see people complain about.
There's a difference between computer lag and internet lag, or what ever.
I think most people posting are getting the "internet" lag, ie: they have high ping. So the cpu, memory, and graphics card are out of the topic.

They may have a frame rate of 120, but a ping of 8,000.

Been bad lately for me as well. Some nights I will go smooth, other times half the team will lag out with >20k ping. I've never really had it happen without someone else in my party, or opposing parties happening at that time too.. unless of course I am farming by myself. Many times in AB it will lag out for a good few seconds, sometimes up to 10-20-30 seconds or DC. It only seems to happen to about half of the party members though.

Seeing as not everyone has the issue, the most logical explanation is a backbone issue or upstream from ANET's servers. A trace route might be useful, but you'll have to be quick to start the pathping to the servers. Also, the servers and/or routers upstream from ANET might be blocking ICMP traffic so pinging might not be a good solution.

Boooo, trying to get ZM done today, 2 dc's while trying to form party, 7500k+ and frozen, then dc in middle of mission, grrr. Trying to do a little farming the last couple days and totally unplayable, constant 5-10 sec freeze ups and rubber banding like a slingshot around the zone, enemies all look like they're shadow stepping all over. Now I know how others feel, never had problems until after Pirate event.

Bummer! I used to test the connection with one of my old characters for a while before I took my survivor out to play. Even then, it was a bit of a crapshoot.

A couple of thoughts on this subject –

First – when my brother and I team up we are in the same house on the same router and ISP. Most times one of us will get kicked and the other is left one man short – have to meet up at town and regroup. If this was an ISP type problem, wouldn’t we both get kicked at the same time?

Second – We can’t remember either of us ever getting disconnected while in a town. If this was a random problem on our end, it seems like it would happen in town too. Is anyone getting kicked while in town?

Not sure if my logic is sound, but I’m inclined to think it’s happening at the source, Anet.

I'm convinced it's happening either at the source or somewhere very close to the source (perhaps in Anet's ISP). I have been disconnected while in towns, but only on one day in my whole GW career (2 days ago when the lag was really really horrible). I bet the threshold for disconnecting is much higher in a town because not as much stuff needs to be tracked by the server there.

While on subject, gameplay yesterday was wonderfully smooth. Thanks to ANet or whoever fixed stuff!

Just d/c again about 80% of the way through a VQ. Thought things got better but I was wrong. Thats about 10 d/cs total last 3 days. Not happy.

3. Type ‘command' into the run box and click ‘OK'
4. This will open a black box, type in here "tracert www.google.com" and then press enter.

You will soon know the comparison after the first 3 traces or so. Just a FYI for you people in need.
Actually this is not correct either because of the transit signal not going in the same direction completely to google as it does to Anet. The problem could actually be in the very last hub or Anets cap. You really have to understand the web to understand the process of sending and receiving signals it isn't just a straight line and two connections it's literally thousands. You have "cap" at your house from which the signal goes to a neightborhood hub which then sends the signal to an area node, which then has to pass through nodes of other areas and regions from your point to Anet or vice versa. Everything can be perfectly fine on both ends yours and theres and the issues could be in the middle somewhere like where there is a violent storm where satellite signals are passing through or high noise density or static where cable is passing through. There are many variables besides it's Anets fault everytime you have an internet lag issue.

If you were going to use the above test you would need to use another site directly in the same area or neighborhood as Anet then if the new one was good and Anets bad then it would probably be at Anets CAP not the hub as the hub is where everything breaks off into the neighborhood.

Well, yesterday I was lagging like crazy doing MQSC. Of course it has to be in German districts, so I was averaging 5k ping the whole trip. Went back to American and it was fine though.

My main beef is getting kicked from the game and not being able to get back in anymore. It makes for a complete waste of hours if you get kicked when vanquishing or almost completing a dungeon. I don’t even bother doing dungeons anymore. At least one person I am playing with loses their connection during a couple hour play session, making it difficult to continue.

A long time ago, when I first began playing in 2006, lag problems happened occasionally where someone would get kicked from the game after lagging, leaving the team one man short.

Then, later that year, as a Christmas present from Anet, when a person dropped from the game, a message came up (with a picture of a Christmas gift next to it) asking if there was a desire to reconnect. After clicking the ‘yes’ option, 99% of the time, that person would come back into the game and be able to move around again and finish what they were doing. This was the best game update ever!

However, suddenly since late last spring, it reverted back to the old 2006 way of game play. Now if you click the ‘yes’ button, 99% of the time the game says, "Reconnect failed," and you are kicked back to the character screen. So much for our Christmas gift. I guess it was revoked.

I had someone come by to fix my internet connection last week (mumbles something about rouge plasma beams) and it works fine now. However I'm still getting tons of lag whenever I log in to gw.

I do a tracert to google and was averaging in the low to mid 40s.
